Featured Book -- EARTHCORE

Scott Sigler, author of EARTHCORE

Dear Reader. EarthCore was a labor of love, devotion, and – let’s be honest – pig-headed stubbornness and downright stupidity. Stupidity, you say? Yes. I wrote eight full versions of the book, from beginning to end. Spent two years coming up with the “first draft.” The final version was 170,000 words, a 700-page behemoth. So I’m long-winded, so sue me. A smarter person would have known when to throw in the towel, when to quit and spend more time watching Seinfeld re-runs.

As I learned the world of publishing, I learned how to edit. Mean editing, with a snarl and a scowl and the attitude “how dare these ineffective words sully the vision of my readers!” You have to be mean, you have to get it down to the REAL STORY, just the goods that readers will dig and no extra garbage. That snarl chopped 50,000 words off that bad boy. So if you get EarthCore, that’s what you’re in for – a cut-to-the-chase, adrenaline-filled, character-driven drag race of a novel that kicks in at 150 miles per hour and accelerates until you smack your melon into a brick wall.  Read at your own risk, and I call dibs on you not suing me if the book gives you heart palpitations.

So why is this book worth your hard-earned money? Because I wrote it knowing you’d spend your hard-earned money, that’s why. I don’t mess around. If you’re going to shell out the bills, I’m going to bust my ass to make sure the book is worth twice what you pay for it. And it is – where else can $20 land you a billion-dollar platinum lode, ex-CIA assassins, lost civilizations, de-evolution, cutting-edge science and predictions of distributed networks, AI and the future of machine sentience? Well, sure, Seinfeld re-runs, but where ELSE? In EarthCore, that’s where.

REVIEW EXCERPTS

An exciting read, and very highly recommended for all science fiction enthusiasts, EarthCore would be a popular addition to community library SciFi collections and documents Scott Sigler as an effective, entertaining storyteller.

~Midwest Book Review

"This novel's got it all: cutting-edge science; a perfectly-realized setting; terror both plausible and profoundly unsettling. EarthCore is more exciting than a thriller has any right to be!"
~Lincoln Child, New York Times bestselling co-author
of: Relic, Riptide, The Ice Limit and Death Match

What's EARTHCORE About?

Deep below a desolate Utah mountain lies the largest platinum deposit ever discovered. A billion-dollar find, it waits for any company that can drill a world's record, three-mile-deep mine shaft. EarthCore is the company with the technology, the resources and the guts to go after the mother lode. Young executive Connell Kirkland is the company's driving force, pushing himself and those around him to uncover the massive treasure.

But at three miles below the surface, where the rocks are so hot they burn bare skin, something has been waiting for centuries. Waiting ...and guarding. Kirkland and EarthCore are about to find out first-hand why this treasure has never been unearthed.

Featured Book -- TWILIGHT OF THE FIFTH SUN

David Sakmyster,
author of TWILIGHT OF THE FIFTH SUN

The genesis for Twilight of the Fifth Sun arose from a fascination with ancient cultures, pyramids and the varying beliefs about the apocalypse.  What I wound up hoping to accomplish was to link varying mythologies together in order to explain the existence of ghosts, the afterlife, and the purpose of our existence all at once.  I made a visit to Mexico, to ancient Teotihuacan, with its mysteries and myths about the end of Fifth Age, and I knew that those grand pyramids had to be in my book.  And with a little more research I found the extraordinary villain I'd been looking for - the spirit of a fifteenth-century murderous Aztec king.  I pitted him against an underprivileged young boy, a journalist with a near-death experience, and the disembodied spirit of a swashbuckling pirate, and let things play out. It was fun to write, fun to research and a joy to see in print.

REVIEW EXCERPTS
Sakmyster knows how to craft a well-plotted mystery, laced with fantasy and horror."
~Phillip Tomasso, award-nominated author of Adverse Impact.

Sakmyster has a keen sense of drama, is a very descriptive storyteller, and
has believable (sometimes heartwarming), true to life characters.
                                     ~ The Penfield Post

What's TWILIGHT OF THE FIFTH SUN About?

Amid the ruins of Ancient Mexico, a prophecy predicts the end of the Fifth Sun, the universal destruction of our own time. Ahuitzotl is determined to fulfill the prophecy, to conquer both the living and the dead, while a ghostly pirate, a journalist, and a young boy fight to stop him.

I recently participated in Vcon 31, Vancouver's major SFF Convention since the 1970s. The con is mostly a literary event, showcasing many authors, artists and editors (this year Barbara Hambly was the writer Guest of Honour). It's a fairly smallish con but a very energetic and friendly one. It was lots of fun and the people were crazy,  especially the ones with the antennae murmuring, "We come in peace...we come in peace..." They disappeared after a little while along with half of the convention. I expect I'll see them all in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe Part 2.

In addition to participating in several interesting panels, I helped launch "The Best of Neo-Opsis Science Fiction Magazine" (published by Bundoran Press and edited by Karl Johanson) by doing a reading of my story, "Virtually Yours", one of the stories selected for the Anthology. I also got "scaped", along with Robert Sawyer and Ed Willett, byScapecast, the new podcast for Farscape Canada: look for my articles there!

What the Reviewers Say

CHASING THE BARD intrigued and mesmerized me with its tale of heartache and sorrow… Philippa Ballantine brilliantly exposes the blindness that causes us to believe we don't need each other whether human or not.

~Sigrid Macdonald, Author of D'Amour Road:

DAUGHTER OF DRAGONS: In this marvelous novel we follow Lathwi's travels as she learns what it is to be human, yet strives to maintain her dragon identity. Kathleen Nelson has created a strong and intriguing female character in a primarily male dominated genre.

THE SHADEBINDER'S OATH Cottrell has managed to mix magic, knights, ancient secrets and the dead in an original and entertaining story. She initially writes each of the threads as separate sections but as the story continues the various plotlines become more and more entwined until they become one single finale. Superb!
