Jason
Henderson
Talks about THE DARKLING BAND
I've
always been proudest working with teams, and novel-writing is a
solitary endeavor, whereas the teamwork really comes along
afterwards, when the art directors and editors and PR guys do their
thing.
But I do love challenges-- the challenge for me with
DARKLING BAND was to deal with a hole I'd written myself into in my
first book, THE IRON THANE. After years of computer game and comics
writing I knew I wanted to return to the world of the Darklings of
THANE, but the problem was that since then I'd come to regard them
as impossible: tall, winged, fyling men and women.
Tall. Winged.
Flying. Which didn't make sense anymore-- on earth, no big mammals
have six limbs, and yet wings are limbs. And
nothing the size of a man flies, yet there they were, flitting
around THE IRON THANE. So THE DARKLING BAND became a book as
much about the mystery of how such a race could exist as what they
did-- and when I chose that as a key topic, suddenly the whole plot
has a lot more urgency. If you have a body that nature abhors, your
race is doomed. And a doomed race will be dangerous to man.
REVIEW of
Jason's previous work
Jason Henderson is a bona fide hat trick, a
published novelist (five and counting) who has also written scripts
for several of the most popular video games ever released, and who
in the past several years has branched out into the ne plus ultra of
Tarantino-esque cool: yes, penning his own sprawling comic book
series." ~ Austin Chronicle.

Connie Ward Talks
about THE GRYPHON HIGHLORD
I'm really happy with the
way my minor characters turned out.
At first I just
sketched them in as
necessary bit players, but they soon developed their own
personalities,
back-stories, quirks, etc. There is
Repachea, the flaky rake with
the heart of gold, Saxton the idealistic young soldier
who only wants to do the right thing, and
Owyn the village hearthmage who
has a lucrative side business catering
to the male population.
I think the reader will
find the most memorable parts of The Gryphon Highlord
will come in the form of one of these secondary characters. I can
say for myself that I've finished many a book wishing the author
would devote a
whole new storyline about a minor but intriguing and unforgettable
character.
REVIEW EXCERPT
Princess Kathedra, the
Gryphon Highlord, is warrior, mage, and every bit a woman. Author
Connie Ward shows a keen eye for detail in this complex tale of
betrayal, adventure, and redemption.

Mennenga talks about Dragon's Fire, Wizard's Flame |

The one thing that I really love about DRAGON’S FIRE,
WIZARD’S FLAME, is that the main characters experience growth as
they journey. The teenage coming of age theme is strongest with Zac,
(our adolescent dragon). As Zac encounters each new conflict, he
must struggle with letting go of his youthful fears, and take
responsibility for himself and his friends. Young readers cannot
help but feel a connection with Zac and his emotions.
EXCERPTS/REVIEWS
“Michael Mennenga is a terrific young-adult
writer. Everybody's been looking for the next J. K. Rowling; well,
here he is.”
Robert J. Sawyer - Nebula Award-winning author of HOMINIDS
“Dragon’s Fire does seem like Fun!”

WHAT'S DRAGON'S FIRE, WIZARD'S FLAME ALL ABOUT?
Seventy-five-year-old Zac—who is
young for a dragon—has endured taunts and pranks from the other
dragons in his secluded village for years, and brought shame and
disgrace to his family because he can’t seem to get the hang of
breathing flames. He ventures out into the dangerous and exciting
human world in search of his fire.
With the help of Abraham (a
clever moose with nerves of steel), Jo (a high-energy squirrel),
Neft (a cantankerous old elf), and Tyralus (a wise and powerful
sage), Zac discovers his “firelessness” is a precious gift that
makes him one of the most powerful dragons on Earth. However, his
gift carries a curse: any wizard can tap into Zac’s power to achieve
his own good (or evil) ends.
