2007 marks a hallmark year for Dragon Moon Press. First we soared up the charts with Ancestor, and now we've done something we've dreamed about for a while - winning Gold!

Awards are a recognition that a book has struck a cord with the judges. It's hard to say what book will do that, especially when many thousands of books are published every year. This year has been momentous for us, we have had a number of books achieve finalist status for several awards, and now GOLD.

First, let's look at The Gryphon Highlord, by Connie Ward. With a strong female protagonist, this book is just plain good storytelling. I remember when I read the first draft, it struck me as something a little different. A good story, with great characterizations and believable actions. It moved along and made the readers care. I felt I would enjoy publishing the book, and offered Connie a contract. After a long road, we finally got the book into print late in 2006. It's nice to see that the judges agreed with me. Taking Gold in the SF category for Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year Award, with a first novel and with the level of competition this award garners, is no mean feat. It's something to be treasured by all of us who worked on the book.

Our big winner of the year though, is Sojourn, by Jana G. Oliver. I actually didn't read the book from beginning to end until it was all printed up in book form. I loved it right from the beginning, but figured it would be a tough one to get an award out of because it crosses genres. Jana even made up a new one for it "Urban Victorian" because we couldn't quite classify it. For me it was the subtle humour and the speed of action. The characters are strong (again a strong female!), the location of Whitechapel at the time of Jack-the-Ripper intriguing, and the wonderful blue spider make for the most memorable novel... oh, or at least until you've read the sequel.

Jana has accomplished so much more with Sojourn than any of us dreamed. With finalist status in 9 awards, so far, and two major wins, including Book of the Year, this book defines what Dragon Moon set out to publish - exciting new realms of science fiction and fantasy. Sojourn just happens to be both.

NEW RELEASE -- ALIEN REVELATION by Tony Ruggiero

ALIEN REVELATION

The climactic conclusion to Alien Deception!

Death has many meanings. For some it is an end while for others it is a beginning. Yet, for one human/alien hybrid, it is a way to have one final chance to try and save Earth, a son he has never seen, and find an enemy that just won't stay dead.

WHAT'S ALIEN REVELATION ABOUT?

The long awaited test of the interstellar spacecraft, which was built with the secret assistance of the United Council for Developing Worlds, is sabotaged. This leads to the discovery of the alien council base on Earth, and also exposes the collusion of Edward Samuel, the President of the United States, with the alien organization. President Edward Samuel is charged with treason and the military has its nuclear weapons poised to strike the alien base unless they surrender.

Soren, the son of Greg and Sarah, has discovered his new talent—the ability to not only influence the thoughts of another person, but to change them completely. If this power, or weapon, should fall into the wrong hands, it could change the balance of control in the galaxy forever. While the leaders of Earth’s countries await the decision of the alien organization, it becomes a race to see who can get to Soren first—his father whose mind is struggling to return from a galactic void, or the most feared and demented alien in the galaxy who has assumed the physical shape of someone very close to Soren.

Reviews:

"The second and final book in Ruggiero’s series continues the enjoyable space opera that began with Alien Deception.  And what a continuation it is! Following the path that made The Empire Strikes Back and The Wrath of Khan such great films, Ruggiero dishes out defeat after defeat to our heroes for most of the book. Actors often claim that villains are more interesting to play, well, it’s just as much fun to watch them succeed on occasion. But of course the good guys win in the end and all of the loose ends are neatly tied up. If Alien Deception could be compared to “Doc” Smith’s Gray Lensman, then Alien Revelation is this series’ Children of the Lens."   ~Michael D. Pederson, Publisher/Editor, Nth Degree

“This book is a wonderful throwback to the good old days of pulp fiction. Trekkies in all their incarnations and Farscape Aficionados should revel in this one. Those who like their SF upbeat with good triumphing over evil should take a peak at this. " ~ David McKinlay, Word of Mouth SF Book Review

News, Updates and Articles

SOJOURN by Jana Oliver -- "This fascinating book is an intricate time travel tale involving journeys between 1888 Victorian England and the year 2057," publisher Victoria Sutherland said. "The book is lavishly researched, with over six dozen sources listed in the author's bibliography. It has already received recognition from other sources, and it is our pleasure to name it as this year's Editor's Choice Prize Winner for Fiction." ~Foreward Magazine

ALIEN DECEPTION by Tony Ruggiero --“Realistic settings and life-filled characters, plus an in-depth and sympathetic view of the vampires, makes Team of Darkness required reading for all fans of horror.--John Patrick Schmitz, The Door to Worlds Imagined

ANCESTOR by Scott Sigler -- "If you are a reader who appreciates a near-perfect blend of hard science and hard-hitting action, expect both in Scott Sigler's masterful thriller, ANCESTOR  ~A.M. Stickel: Black Petals Magazine

Nina Munteanu, author of DARWIN'S PARADOX:  I recently attended the Romance Writers of America Vancouver Chapter Conference, "Write on, Vancouver" held on May 4-5 in scenic New Westminster Quay overlooking the Fraser River. Not that I had time to check out the view. Networking with over 100 professional and fledgling romance writers and guest speakers kept me busy. If you haven't cross-genre conferenced before, I highly recommend it.  It's a learning experience in ways you can't possibly imagine. Guest of Honor, Nancy Kress (author of 11 science fiction books, including her 'sleepless' trilogy) remarked during her keynote speech that this romance conference was "nothing like a science fiction conference". The guffaws that erupted betrayed the few SF writer interlopers, who'd clearly come to see Nancy Kress.

Nancy Kress quietly radiates warmth and grace. Quoting Proust to Falkner, she enthralled a crowd of eager writers with several workshops that illuminated, educated and inspired. Nancy tirelessly tackled some of the most difficult and daunting elements faced by published and unpublished writers alike, like how to perfect that first page. "Every novel is a war," she said then added a challenge, a quote by Susan Sontag: "real art makes us nervous." Good literature, no matter what genre, pushes the edge of our comfort and makes us think. Well, are you nervous yet?

From Jana Oliver, author of SOJOURN  Well, the BIG news is that SOJOURN brought home the Gold Medal for Science Fiction/Fantasy in the Independent Publisher Book Awards. According to their website, there were almost 2700 entries from all 50 states, 8 Canadian provinces and 17 countries overseas.  I was even interviewed for SciFi.com (Sci Fi Channel's newswire) regarding SOJOURN. Also, I am participating in a writers' workshop at A-Kon where four authors critique the work of new writers with an eye to help them improve their craft and see their stories in print.

Scott Sigler's topselling new release, ANCESTOR, is still flying off the shelves at Amazon and other book stores. If you're wondering why, check out Scott's latest nail-biting contribution at youtube. Just follow this link One reviewer of this gem suggested that people NOT watch it at night-- it's too scary. Kind of like Scott himself, don't you think?

From A. P. Fuchs, contributor to COMPLETE GUIDE, regarding his recent book:  "Axiom-man is that unique breed of superhero that seems almost lost amid today's gaggle of the dark and tormented. He's nice, he cares, and his strength comes not from his fantastic powers, but from his soul. A.P. Fuchs has written a defining superhero novel." ~ Frank Dirscherl, author/creator of The Wraith
