| NEW
RELEASE -- SMALL MAGICS by Erik Buchanan |
Erik says:
What happens to a highly intelligent person faced with events
that completely shatter his world view? That question and the
ideas that grew from it led to
Small Magics and to
its protagonist, Thomas Flarety.
Thomas is an accomplished scholar and fencer-the results of
four years study at the Royal Academy. He learns dead languages
just to study ancient philosophy, argues about the existence of
the gods and does not believe in such silly things as magic. Of
course, magic is exactly what Thomas encounters, and its effects
are both profound and devastating.
As I wrote Small Magics,
I quickly realized that
Thomas's mind is even faster than his
rapier (though his mouth occasionally outpaces them both). He is
a bright, quick-thinking young man who leads with his brains,
which is what makes him so interesting to watch when he faces
the destruction of everything he thinks is true.
Of course, having a character as smart as Thomas presents a
problem: given the chance, he will figure things out, so how do
you keep him from doing just that? The answer is to keep him off
balance, which is one of the reasons that
Small Magics became
as fast-paced as it is. The action sweeps Thomas along as he
struggles to come to grips with the magic he doesn't believe in
and the danger that threatens everything he holds dear.
WHAT'S
SMALL MAGICS ABOUT?
In
a world where no one really believes in magic, one man is
stealing all that is left...
When Thomas Flarety came home from the Royal Academy he expected
some scolding. He'd done well in his classes, but he was too
thin, his clothes were threadbare, and he was wearing a rapier
he'd won at a fencing tournament.
Thomas wasn't expecting that his father would declare him a
ruffian and disgrace and send him away without even the chance
to put down his luggage. Or that Bishop Malloy would be there
and that the man's voice would ooze with a power that could make
Thomas's father do his bidding. Or that he would meet a juggler
who could create a ball of light out of the air.
And he certainly wasn't expecting to be the only one who noticed
it all.
Before long,
Thomas finds himself thrust into a nightmare of betrayal and murder,
where all that he has is threatened by a power he does not
understand, and where learning to master a power he did not know
he had may be the only way he can survive.

ALERT!!
By the way, Erik might
appear
to be a
suave and sexy young actor, but a
certain sweetie, Maggie, knows that his
real
name is Daddy, and has him right under her thumb,
where he belongs.

| FEATURED
BOOK -- ALIEN DECEPTION by Tony Ruggiero |
Tony says:
Alien Deception (May 2006) and
Alien Revelation
(upcoming, July 2007) are described as
space opera with a
Stanley Kubrick twist. These books are special to me
because they are a reflection back to my childhood and the type of
books that hooked me on science fiction. Space opera, stories that
deal more with character and their conflict rather than technology,
has always held a special place for me and for many readers.
If I had to pick
one thing I truly love about this story it is that the characters,
even the aliens, are lifelike which makes them easy to
associate with.
Greg and Sarah are a young man and woman who find
themselves in an awkward situation with an alien organization while
they also deal with an obvious attraction that they each have for
each other. But, because of their situation, they have to grow up
very quickly, something I think many of us have faced in our own
lives. On the alien side, we have an extremely vain, yet caring
alien, Leumas who
only wants what is good for the alien organization. At times he is
like a used car salesman while at others he is a statesman.
There is Copolla, the evil alien who only wants to achieve conquest
over all worlds and at any cost. It’s his secret that the story
revolves upon. Lastly, there is President Edward Samuel who has to
make a decision on whether or not the United States should align
itself with the alien organization.

Short
stories from Alien and Satanic Creatures Wanted: Humans Need Not

myspace webpage in weekly
installments.

ALIEN DECEPTION
FINALIST
FOR
ForeWord
Magazine's Best Sci Fi of 2006
The climactic conclusion to Alien Deception!
Greg is visited by a mysterious alien who claims to have the
answers that he seeks—how to save the Earth from ultimate
destruction by the approaching alien fleet led by the ruthless
Copolla. However, the answer provided by the mysterious alien does
not come without a very high price which Greg has no choice but to
pay.
Soren, the son of Greg and Sarah, has discovered his new
talent—the ability to not only influence the thoughts of another
person, but to change them completely. If this power, or weapon,
should fall into the wrong hands, it could change the balance of
control in the galaxy forever. While the leaders of Earth’s
countries await the decision of the alien organization, it becomes a
race to see who can get to Soren first—his father whose mind is
struggling to return from a galactic void, or the most feared and
demented alien in the galaxy who has assumed the physical shape of
someone very close to Soren.

ANCESTOR, by Scott
Sigler--
“Bad things happen to bad people in this book. Then they
happen some more. Very. Bad. Things. Things that make you
wonder just what sort of childhood the author must have
lived through. No way I'm going caving with him anytime
soon. Or letting him near knives in my presence." ~
