BILLIBUB BADDINGS
and the Case of the Pitcher's Pendant
by Tee Morris
DIGITAL MAGIC
by Philippa Ballantine
Remember the dwarf detective that faced off with Al Capone and dark  magic in 1929 Chicago? It has been four years since the foot-foot-one private dick has walked the mean streets of the Windy City, and with  the success of its 2007 podcast, people have been wondering "What's next?"

Worry no longer...the biggest little detective of Chicago is back, and on 08.08.08 you can show your support for Billi on Amazon.com!

Chicago, 1930, and following the financial calamity of Black Thursday, Billi is doing everything he can to keep his business afloat. The change in seasons, though, brings him a case that appears to be a true blessing from The Fates. Chicago Cubs Manager Joe McCarthy suspects something fishy with the Baltimore Mariners, a new team in the league, and he's hiring Billi to look into it.

What appears to be the dream job - being paid to research and attend baseball games - turns out to be a nightmare. And wouldn't you know it - with two outs and bases loaded, the heavy hitter of the Underworld "Big Al" gets early parole from The Big Dugout and is swinging two in the Batter's Circle.

Across three podcasts, Tee is sending out word that on 08.08.08 fans of the dwarf detective can pick up their copy of The Case of the Pitcher's Pendant: A BILLIBUB BADDINGS Mystery. While you can pre-order, the numbers will not rollover to the official release date.  Therefore, Tee is saying "Wait until August 8th, and then hit Amazon  hard!"

Tee is joining forces with Philippa Ballantine, author of CHASING THE BARD. Along with Chicago's dwarf detective making things harder  for the criminal element, Puck is up to his tricks -- old and new -- in Bard's sequel, DIGITAL MAGIC.

Award nominated podcaster and New Zealand author Philippa Ballantine returns to the world of the Fey in the sequel to CHASING THE BARD.  DIGITAL MAGIC is a tale of the future in which magic is nearly gone, and our world is suffering from its loss.

Penheram is a quaint, sleepy English village where people escape the 21st century. Hiding from the world of laptop computers, the Internet, and wireless communications, is Ella. Like everyone in the village she has her secrets, but is content to live her life quietly. Everything changes however with the arrival of a shape shifting thief, someone with his own unspoken stories. Suddenly everyone from the local librarian to the lady of the manor begin to change, revealing true natures and dangerous pasts.

While in far off New Zealand, war and strife have come. A young girl struggles to live in a world turned upside down, while the Fey whisper from the forest to her of even more doom. Her place in the approaching drama is something she cannot ignore and she must take up the role of leader as the Unmaker's forces move against her and those she loves.

Two stories and two worlds draw together as the human world spirals down into darkness, where only the Fey can offer any hope.

Additional information on the two authors can be found through their respective podcasts, Philippa's Whispers at the Edge  and Tee's The Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy . Their voices can also be heard in the podcast novels:

CHASING THE BARD  by Philippa Ballantine
MOREVI: Remastered  by Tee Morris

So show a little love for the dwarf and the Fey,
and hit
Amazon on  08.08.08 for your copies of
THE CASE OF THE PITCHER'S PENDANT and DIGITAL MAGIC.

Jana Oliver, author of the award winning TIME ROVER series, now reporting from London.
Most Americans do the touristy things when they’re in London: go see Big Ben, the Tower, Westminster Abbey. Not me. I went to a murder trial. That might seem odd until you learn that next book in the Time Rovers Series (MADMAN’S DANCE) includes a trial and a turn at the hangman’s noose. Research was needed.

I took a turn at the Old Bailey (Central Criminal Courts). Though our system of law is based on the English model, there are definite differences. A British courtroom isn't laid out exactly like ours. Though the judge is still at the front of the room and the jury is to the right, that’s when things differ. Directly in front of the judge, at about the midpoint of the room, is the dock, a raised area where the defendant sits. To the judge’s left is where the defence (British spelling) and the prosecutor reside, and behind them are their support staff. Note the defence counsel is not sitting with his client. That’s interesting.

In Britain they have two types of attorneys -- a solicitor (who does not plead cases in front of the court) and a barrister (who does). In this case the appropriate folks were wigged and gowned, including the judge. It adds a certain solemnity to the occasion which sometimes is missing in our courtrooms. Unlike our “All Rise!” they call “Be Up Standing!” when the judge enters the room.

Unlike our system, the judge is an active participant in the proceedings, not just a moderator between the defence and prosecutor. The judge will put questions to the barristers and to the witnesses. He will sum up the case at the end, adding his own thoughts on the issue at hand. Unlike the U.S., the British system does not require a consensus of the jury. 10-2 will get you convicted.

As with most American trials, they move at a snail’s pace. Perched as I was high in the spectator’s gallery just above the assistants’ tables, it was amusing to see one of them diligently working on a Sudoku puzzle. I suspect that happens more often than not, both in England and in the U.S. It appears we’re not that different after all.

Jana Oliver is the author of SOJOURN, VIRTUAL EVIL, and the upcoming MADMAN'S DANCE, available at Dragon Moon Press.

Tee Morris, author of the BILLIBUB BADDINGS mystery series, and
Philippa Ballantine, author of DIGITAL MAGIC and CHASING THE BARD
