NEW RELEASE -- LACHLEI by M. H. Bonham

 MAGGIE SAYS:

I got the idea for Lachlei back in 2001. I'd been writing my other books, Prophecy of Swords, Runestone of Teiwas, and Web of Wyrd.  In Runestone of Teiwas, I’m not sure where anymore – it might have even gotten edited out – and Lachlan and Elsonre made some comment about their mother.  I needed a name and I played off of Lachlan’s name and her name became Lachlei.  So, that’s how she came into being, just with a name.

As I was working on my books, I realized I didn’t have a major female protagonist as I wanted.  Kalena, Joreid and Arianne in my other books are big characters (and in fact now Kalena has a short novel), but at the time, I didn’t have a female hero who could complete with characters like Lachlan and Shadowhelm.  So, I kept going back to Lachlei and wondering what kind of woman could attract and be attracted to a god?  (I was going to use much more salty language here, but for the sake of readers, I’ll refrain).  I mean, throughout legends and myths there are stories of women who get knocked up by gods, and all of them seemed pretty much victims. Even in Christian belief, you’ve got Mary, who submits.  I thought that all of this was pretty male-centric.

For one thing, I’m not really a romantic.  You won’t get a mushy love story out of my writing – you’ll get a body count.  I start Chapter One blowing up the universe and then Chapter Two killing off five people.  I’m not sentimental.  So, Lachlei became tougher than nails and not very compliant.  Yet, at the same point, I had Rhyn’athel, who is the warrior god.  He too is a very strong and central character. Throw in a rival god, demons, undead and a war, and it becomes a powerful epic story of a war for control of the universe and the fate of the races. I love twists and turns.  Rollercoaster!  I want a fun ride.  I get bored too easily with a single plot.

Asked about her biggest literary influence while growing up, Maggie adds:

"I’ll admit I’ve been heavily influenced by Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Ronald E. Howard’s Conan, and Michael Moorcock’s Elric series.  Probably Frank Herbert’s Dune, CJ Cherryh’s Faded Sun, Ursula LeGuin’s Earthsea, and maybe some of Leigh Brackett’s work.  Oddly enough, my pacing is probably most influenced by the original Star Wars trilogy and the Indiana Jones movies.

There are current authors out there that I like, such as Tee Morris, Laura Underwood, Selina Rosen, Bill Allen, and Bev Hale, but I don’t think any of their stories influence mine.  A lot of fantasy with female protagonists tend to fall into the slipstream-romance type of thing anymore, and while it’s interesting, that’s not what Lachlei is about.  It’s about a strong woman who just lost her husband, forced into a terrible battle against a god."

Maggie, is there a sequel coming along?

"It's currently in the works. The tentative title is OUTCASTS OF THE CHI'LAN.  It picks up about 15 years after Lachlei."

REVIEWS FOR M. H. BONHAM'S PREVIOUS BOOK
PROPHECY OF SWORDS

"Once I picked up the book, however, it drew me in, wrapping me in subtle intrigues, vagaries of politics, and poignant characters. I found it difficult to put down, taking it with me wherever I went, snatching a few moments between appointments to read a paragraph here, a page there..."
       ~ Becka Goad SciFIFX.com

3 Lanterns!   "Bonham delivers a story that is large in scale, but full of well-drawn characters that most readers will feel a connection to by the end of the book..." -- Michael Loos, Deep Magic.net

News, Updates and Articles

“Nobody creates tougher than nails heroines better than Selina Rosen. She’s outdone even herself with Conner ‘The Hammer’ McVee, a cyborg who is half-human, half-machine and all woman. Hammer Town is high octane science fiction overflowing with adventure, humor, romance and blue collar sensibilities. Persons not enjoying this book must be diagnosed as entertainment impaired.”
~ Garrett Peck, co-editor of Personal Demons and Tooth & Claw.
VIRTUAL EVIL (by Jana Oliver) is a sensory overload of spine tingling adventure and mind-tickling wit.
    ~FantasyBookSpot
"LACHLEI is short but packed with action, an epic fantasy in which gods and mortals interact, the dead play as important a role in the Wyrd as the living, and ancient rivalries and secrets have the power to surprise even the masters of the Nine Worlds."
     ~ Dru Pagliassotti, The Harrow

FROM OUR PUBLISHER, GWEN GADES

The Guides have their own website! It's still a work in progress, but I would invite you to hop on over and join our site. You'll be the first to hear tidbits, industry info etc from us. Expect it to change its look over the next while. I am still not a fan of Wordpress, since I'm just learning it, and I'm not the best site administrator out there. (OK, I will admit, I'm a terrible site administrator. :)

And a note on The Complete Guide(tm) to Writing Fantasy: Volume 3~The Author's Grimoire. Due to scheduling issues (aka we weren't 100% sure when it would be ready to go, and the distributor makes us put things in the catalogue almost a year before release dates), the third volume to the award-nominated series had a soft launch just before Christmas. That is, we printed up some copies and filled orders to anxious Amazon customers, but the book will officially launch in May 2008 when it rolls out with our distributor, Fitzhenry and Whiteside. So no need to worry, nobody has missed anything yet, we're just getting organized with this new system for us. It's much, much different from the "Oh, the books ready; let's print 'em up and sell them" philosophy that we had been using. That was a more seat-of-your-pants approach. Worked OK, but now we're on the methodical, everything on a schedule, approach. Takes some getting used to! I think I like the old way better, but the industry prefers the methodical, so there it be.

We will be opening submissions up again shortly, so please make sure to check out the website for details... www.dragonmoonpress.com. Our guidelines are very specific and our rejection rate is very high (as it is with all publishers) but we are going to be expanding into Paranormal Romances (see the launch next year with MH Bonham's HOWLING DEAD). We will continue to look for exceptional fantasy and SF. AND we're going to be looking for some very serious help to add to our collection of writing how-to's. It's exciting.

On that same note, the Dragon Moon site will shortly be getting a complete make-over. We'll shortly be posting the new site live. Please notify us of any links that don't work. We try hard to make sure they do, but you know how it goes! Keeping in line with our classic look, the new site is clean and simple, but is being planned to be database driven, hopefully making it easier for us to keep it up to date, since it's become quite the hassle to do so.

Thanks for reading Dragon Moon Press titles. We've got more coming soon!

The Writer Magazine's July issue will contain a great article called "Fueling the Writer Within", written by our very own Michele Acker - contributor to the EPPIE winning "Complete Guide to Writing Science Fiction" 2007

From Philippa Ballantine, author of CHASING THE BARD:  I'm being honored as the New Zealand Guest of Honour at New Zealand's national sci fi convention! Not only that, but my writing podcast Whispers at the Edge has been nominated for a Sir Julius Vogel Award for best fan writing.

I've tried something new in the way of voice work--if you're interested in catching me and Tee Morris doing voice work as a sex-changing fantasy character, well, you can check it out here. And don't forget, my new podcast of CHASING THE BARD will be out at the end of March

From Tony Ruggiero, author of ALIEN REVELATION, will attend two events in March.

  • March 14-16 Stellarcon in High Point, North Carolina

  • March 22 Galacticon in Virginia Beach, Virginia

Other news from Tony: I have discovered the joy of puppy day care. Yes, you heard correctly--daycare for dogs. Why would anyone in his right mind spend money to take their dog somewhere to hang out? Because they want to stay in their right mind is my answer! By the time I get the pup back home--she is too tired from running around all day to get in any trouble. So I get some peace and less eaten manuscripts! So until I am independently wealthy from writing--I guess doggie daycare will be in the picture.

K. A. Bedford, EDGE author of TIME MACHINES REPAIRED WHILE-U-WAIT, will be the Guest of Honor at ConVersion here in Calgary, and is also going to Dragon*Con and World Science Fiction Con in Denver. Watch for our next newsletter which will bring you Chapter One of this breakout science fiction novel!

From Nina Munteanu, author of DARWIN'S PARADOX:  The book signing at Chapters in Pinetree Village (Coquitlam, British Columbia) was a blast. I first met with wonderful and helpful Chapters staff (they are all so friendly!), including managers Jenny and Linda. They even treated me to a Hazelnut latte from the Starbucks there! (I guess they wanted me awake and spry to glad-hand potential Darwin readers, which of course I did!).

No sooner had I set up my Valentine's Day table, when a diverse and interesting group of readers streamed in and greeted me with avid interest. I met young and old (thanks to the chocolates I had out front!) and engaged in some diverting and challenging discussions on evolution, creationism, artificial intelligence, synthetic life, among other topics. I met Louise, an environmental activist at Simon Fraser University, George Meech, another writer (see his "The Mating of Mala" by I Universe, available at Chapters), Janet and Kimberley, a mom and daughter (about the same age as Julie and Angel); Brent, who is fascinated by the architecture of the universe and topics like chaos theory, autopoiesis and synchronicity; Dominika, a behavior psychologist (she's going to have fun reading about Julie!); John and his daughter, an avid sociologist. I also met Bruce (a fantasy writer) and Gina, a teacher, both who are writers looking to publish.  Just as I dug in my heels to stay the entire evening (I was having too much fun!), Teresa Young and another friend descended upon me with promises of a cheap supper and beer. How could I refuse? Teresa is a long-time friend and also the gifted illustrator who will be providing illustrations for the PDF/Audio book version of Darwin's Paradox, due this summer.  Besides, she's bigger than me and won't take no for an answer.

As always, these signings are a wonderful opportunity for me to connect with readers of different backgrounds, cultures and interests (and not necessarily those who read my book), all intelligent and interesting people. I thank Chapters and their kind staff for this wonderful opportunity.  My tour continues in the Lower Mainland with these events:

  • Writing Workshop: Thursday, March 13 at the Fraser Valley Regional Library (Pioneer Library) in Ladner at 7 pm

  • Book signing: Saturday, March 15 at Chapters, Strawberry Hill Center in Surrey at 1 pm to 5 pm

  • Book signing: Saturday, March 22 at Chapters, Granville & Broadway in Vancouver at 1 pm to 4 pm

  • Book signing: Saturday, March 29 at Chapters, Metrotown Centre in Burnaby at 1 pm to 4 pm.

Hope to see you there. Come and say hi. You might even get a chocolate (if that little kid in the blue top doesn't get them all first!).
